Scan-from-Image forms use tombstones to de-skew
the page, and
to measure offsets to the areas on the page that are read. OMR marks
are read (and are generally designed to the underlying object
grid). The other feature of Scan-from-Image forms is Handprint
fields,
which are used to mainly collect numeric handprint for processing via
OCR software where a 3% error rate can be expected. Full
alphanumeric data may be collected, but the error rate may be too great
to be economic. Error rates around 10% are common, meaning one
character in 10 will be read incorrectly or not at all. If the software
offers editing from image for individual fields, you may have an
economic proposition. We have another product for data
collection
forms, see the web site under Forms-on-Demand.
The new generation
of OMR readers offer both capabilities, they read OMR from timing marks
and handprint fields from the image, both taken in the same pass of the
form through the scanner. Handprint objects are available for
forms of both types.
